Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 5: A Sarpanch in South Kashmir is alleged to have fraudulently withdrawn land compensation to the tune of Rs 68 lakh from an account head at the district headquarters against the works executed by Rural Development Department and PDD.
Official sources said a sarpanch of Marhama area in South Kashmir had allegedly withdrawn Rs 68 lakh from an account head established for the compensation of Kahcharai land that has come under the road widening on National Hihway 1 in Anantnag district. Sources alleged that the sarpanch, who was a PDP leader, had so for withdrawn Rs 68 lakh from a particular head against some development works allegedly carried out by other agencies like Rural Development Department and Power Development Department.
Sources alleged that the sarpanch was hand in glove with a local politician. Sources said that an amount of 1.79 crore was released by the concerned agencies as land compensation to the Kahcharai land that has come under the road widening from Merzepora to Sangam Bridge. Sources said that amount was deposited in a particular head by the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag which was supposed to be spent on development works after the due consultation with the inhabitants of these villages.
Sources however, alleged that a local politician asked the sarpanch to give him a list of the works of his area to be carried out by spending the compensation amount. The sarpanch, according to sources, gave a memorandum to the politician who in turn forwarded the it to the district development commissioner Anantnag.
Sources said that the amount withdrawn so for has been shown spent on installation of electric polls at village Halamullah and Check Dadu, fencing of ziarat at Marhama and construction of a link road of 500 meters at Ikhrajpora Marhama.
The villagers have appealed to the State Vigilance Organization and the Crime Branch to investigate the embezzlement of the public money and take appropriate action against the sarpanch.
