A startling revelation: Who in Mufti Govt ordered arrest of Hurriyat leaders? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 24: Spokesperson of the ruling PDP Mehboob Beg on Sunday made a very startling revelation. He said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who also holds the Home portfolio, didn't know who ordered the arrest of Hurriyat leaders and JKLF chief Yasin Malik. "As soon as the arrest of the 'separatists' came to the knowledge of the Chief Minister, he immediately ordered their release, strengthening and further showing his commitment and constant stand that 'talks and talks alone' is the way-out," he was quoted as saying. In other words, he rejected the suggestion that it was the Chief Minister, who under the instructions from New Delhi, ordered the arrest of Hurriyat leaders and that they were released only after PDP president Mehbooba Mufti intervened in the matter. A few Hurriyat leaders plus JKLF chief Yasin Malik were either put under house arrest or were arrested by the police on Friday to prevent them from traveling to New Delhi to hold talks with the visiting Pakistan National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz. The talks were called off by Pakistan on Saturday after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj rejected Pakistan's two conditions - discussion on Kashmir issue and meetings with Kashmiri separatists. Earlier, Islamabad had questioned the arrest of Kashmiri separatists in Srinagar as well as Delhi, saying they were the "true representatives" of Kashmiri people and talks with them were necessary. NC working president Omar Abdullah had also questioned the PDP-BJP coalition Government's action leading to the arrest, release and re-arrest of Kashmiri separatists and blamed both the Mufti Government and the Union Government for creating hurdles in the proposed dialogue process. He also accused New Delhi of making a big issue out of a non-issue and lambasted the Mufti Government and the PDP for settling scores with them. Mehboob Beg's Sunday statement that Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed was not aware as to who had the Kashmiri separatists arrested and that he took no time in ordering their release after he came to know about this development has raised many questions. After all, Mufti Sayeed, besides being the Chief Minister, was also the Home Minister, who controlled the state police and many intelligence agencies. Who took the first initiative without taking the Chief Minister in the loop and had Kashmiri separatists arrested? This question needs a definite answer. You cannot have a Government where the Home Minister is kept in complete dark on sensitive issues. The arrest of Kashmiri separatists was not an ordinary or a routine decision. It was a major decision that had the potential bringing a bad name to the Mufti Government or giving a long stick to the defeated NC leadership to beat the PDP from right and left. The PDP spokesperson is not the right authority to disclose everything concerning the circumstances leading to the arrest of Kashmiri separatists. The Government spokesperson needs to explain everything about the episode so that people came to know who created an awkward situation for the Chief Minister by arresting Kashmiri separatists on their own. |
