After separatists authorities arrest traders, enforce restrictions to foil flood anniversary programmes | KCC&I condemns police action, threatens of district wise protest rallies | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 7: The authorities today imposed restrictions in some areas in order to thwart rallies and other programmes that were supposed to be carried out by different trade organizations in connection with first anniversary of September 2014 deluge. Different trade organization leaders like Mohammad Yaseen Khan, Mohammad Showkat Chaudhary and Mohammad Sadiq Baqal were arrested by police so as to the foil their programme on the day. Majority of the separatist leaders were also put under house arrest by the police since they had extended support to the programme of the different trade bodies. At the same time the strike call given by parallel factions of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) and Kashmir Traders Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) evoked good response in Srinagar. The call for strike was also given by Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I). The strike call evoked partial response in some of the districts as well as towns of Kashmir valley. Most of the shops and commercial establishments remained closed due to the strike call. Movement of the public transport was affected badly since the transporters also participated in the strike to a great extent. Almost all the private schools remained closed since two associations of private schools also supported the strike call. The Kashmir Bar Association (KBA) also extended its support to the call for strike. The strike call was given against the alleged apathy of state and central government towards the rehabilitation of the people affected by last year's devastating deluge. The traders' organizations have been carrying out frontal attacks on the people at helm alleging that nothing has been done to rehabilitate the flood hit people. The KTMF led by Baqal had decided to carry out a protest rally in the Lal Chowk against the government 'indifference'. However, before he could do it he was arrested by the police. On the other hand the KEA headed by Yaseen was barred from holding a function near the Clock Tower in Lal Chowk. The KEA had planned to award those people who did exemplary work in carrying out relief and rescue operations in last year's deluge. Restrictions were put in place by the government in the Batmaloo, Abi Guzar, Maisuma and Lal Chowk areas in order to keep the traders at bay. Barbed wires had been erected so as to thwart the rallies and programmes of the traders. Police ensured that no congregation or rally is carried out at these places and the day passes off peacefully. Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCC&I) termed the government action of arresting the traders as deplorable and called it totally unjustified. In a statement, KCC&I President Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad said that such a step had become inevitable because of complete 'silence' adopted by both state and central governments by not announcing and releasing the compressive package for floods sufferers of Kashmir. Ashiq said that KCC&I have decided to pursue more vigorously the solution of problems that have arisen out of flood of September 2014. He said that protest rallies would be carried out at all district headquarters. Interaction will be carried out with national and international media organizations both at Srinagar and New Delhi to highlight the gravity of the situation pushing the people of Kashmir towards severe economic crisis. |
