'Chamchas can't cow me down, I have been to jail' | Beig, Akhter cold war gets hot | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 7: The cold war between senior Peoples Democratic Party leaders Muzaffar Hussain Beig, known for his integrity in the state politics, and Nayeem Akhter has deepened with the former having spilled the beans at a public event here yesterday by repeatedly terming some of his colleagues as "Chamchas who can't cow him down". While addressing a government function organized by New light Education and Environmental Service Foundation- New light Education and Environmental Society (NEESF-NEES) at SKICC on Saturday, Beig who is a Member Parliament and had done appreciable work during his tenure as finance minister in the state, for the first time, in full public gaze, expressed his resentment towards some of the party leaders. He is a good orator and used to convince the opposition with his reasonable arguments in the state assembly. In the assembly, he handled all the important issues on behalf of PDP, giving his party an edge over others. Though he didn't name anyone, his apparent target was Education Minister Nayeem Akhter. Beig said the state government has become the "biggest hurdle in the implementation of a comprehensive education policy", and in the absence of a policy, the education system is in chaos. "I want to tell you that the future of our youth is being destroyed and deliberate attempts are being made to make them suffer further," Beig said, amid sobs. He said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was being fed wrong impression about others by some opportunists whom he termed as "sycophants" and added that latter was not "so naïve" to get impressed with "such a feedback". "Every great person has few sycophants (people) around him. But people who have to shoulder huge responsibilities should not get swayed by such opportunists. Instead such people should be kept at bay," he said. Beg said even though the function pertained to education, Director Education Shah Faesal, who is allegedly close to Education Minister Nayeem Akhter was missing from the scene. He questioned the absence of officials of Education department in the function hinting that such officials were not working as government servants but political workers. The former Finance Minister said there were people who tried hard to prevent him and participants from attending the event. "CID sleuths were deployed to prevent me and people from attending this event. But they should know that it is not the reign of Hitler. And I am not the one who is scared of anyone," he said. "These sycophants must know that I won't be cowed down by their tactics. I have spent more than 14 years in jails and I will continue to raise my voice for my people," he added. Sources said prompted by Beig';s remarks, Akhter has started projecting himself as "victim of undue abuse" before the party high command. "He has intensified his campaign against Beig because latter's remarks gave him the chance to do so more openly," the sources said. It has been a long drawn cold war between Nayeem Akhter , Beg and some other leaders. Insiders said some of the party workers for their vested interests have been playing the dubious role of widening wedge between the PDP leaders. "There have been some party workers/ government officials who for personal gains leaked information from one camp to another thereby triggering distrust between the leaders," said a party leader adding that some such "black sheep were under scanner." "In one such case, a middle rung official, actually a backdoor entry, who was working in the media cell with Beg Sahib when he was Finance Minister in the previous PDP government ended up being a spy of rival lobby," said a PDP leader adding that "such turncoats have been responsible for growing infighting within the party." Sources close to Beg said his role in the party working was sabotaged by some of his colleagues and "party workers" since last year when he won the Baramulla seat in the Parliament elections and had to spend most of the time in New Delhi. "Basically some leaders were jealous of Beig Sahib's intelligence and thus wickedly distanced him from the party affairs to make space of less experienced names to get in," the sources close to Beig said. Repeated attempts to contact Muzaffar Beg went in vain. ----(On the alleged differences between beig and name akhtar)
