Under fire from all quarters, Govt may revoke decision on 'jazia tax' | | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 7: Under tremendous from all quarters and facing acute criticism from its own alliance partner BJP, the PDP led Government in the state may revoke its decision on imposing a 12.5% service tax to pilgrims travelling to Vaishno Devi shrine by helicopter. From all political parties in the state to its main rival at Centre, BJP is under fire for what the Congress and even own leaders in the state have termed the decision no less than Jazia tax. Most likely the Government will rescind its decision tomorrow, highly placed sources said. Sources said in order to prevent the issue to snowball into a major controversy and to avoid embarrassment from political opponents, the Centre has given instructions to the J&K Government, mainly to its party in alliance to immediately get the order cancelled. Sources further said that the Central leadership of the BJP is particularly concerned and is unhappy the way BJP has pleaded ignorance and termed it as unilateral decision of the PDP. This has brought more humiliation to the party, sources said as the leadership having expressed anger over the developments and response of the party. Sources said the party is displeased with the move in the wake of the fact that on one hand PM Narendra Modi is laying emphasis on pilgrim tourism and only few days back the Centre announced a proposal to construct Expressway between New Delhi and Katra in view of huge rush of pilgrims. On the other hand the State Government with such decisions is not only negating the Union Government's focus and thrust on facilities but also discouraging the inflow pilgrims to the shrine. |
