BJP's win in LAHDC poll a fluke not a trend setter
10/25/2015 12:31:10 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, Oct 24: Yes, the BJP has created history by winning, for the first time, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) election. What is important for the BJP is that it has not won the election by a simple majority but has secured a two-third majority as it bagged 18 out of 26 seats.
About a year ago the BJP had created history when it bagged 25 out of 37 seats in the Assembly election from the region of Jammu. The previous record has been 11. Even as Janata party the saffron parivaar and its allies had won 11 seats in 1977 Assembly election.
In fact the LAHDC has remained in the hands of the Congress and the victory of the BJP in the Leh election is treated as a major setback for the Congress. If the National Conference has won two to three seats it is not a mandate against the NC because compared to Kargil district National Conference has a weak vote bank in Leh district. Those who treat the poll results as a major setback for the Congress refer to the defeat of two senior Congress leaders, Rigzin Spalbar and Norbo Gailchan.
And those who had predicted dim future for the BJP seem to have gone wrong. Is it so? Not Those who feel that the future is secure for the BJP are equally wrong. Leh is not entire Jammu and Kashmir. In fact the BJP was on a weak wicket in Leh from the day the poll schedule for the LAHDC was announced. The BJP needs to thank the RSS as its activists and leaders carried out much needed door to door campaign which facilitated victory for the BJP.
One need not doubt that the BJP is on its down the hill journey. It had no base in the Kashmir valley and soon after the BJP led NDA Government assumed power in the centre the BJP had hoped for a miracle by increasing its vote bank in the Kashmir valley. A number of Muslims joined the BJP and one had expected that the BJP could strengthen its vote bank in the valley.
Surprisingly, the BJP is a hated organization in the Kashmir valley. It is so not because of its political ideology but on account of its failure to have sanctioned adequate financial package for those hit and affected by floods in September 2014. The BJP is on a down the hill journey because its commitment to help the state in enhancing its power generation has not been fulfilled. Its commitment on helping the state in building AIIMS type institutes in Jammu and Kashmir has not been fulfilled. Its commitment on providing financial package for resolving the problem of unemployment has not been met.
Hence those BJP leaders who seem to have started rejoicing over the party's historic win in LAHDC election, should realize that the ground, on which the BJP was supposed to stand on, is slipping. Compared to the three regions of the state only the region of Jammu has been the region of influence for the BJP. And the region of Jammu stands lost for the BJP in case the Assembly elections were held within next three to six months.
If the BJP led NDA Government continues to provide stepmotherly treatment to the people of the Jammu region the BJP may not be able to repeat either 2014 Assembly election performance or even the 2008 poll performance. Winning LAHDC election is no guarantee for the BJP to win the Assembly election from Ladakh region. If it wins it may not prove material for the BJP to stake claim for power or remain in a position to share power because the entire Ladakh province has four Assembly segments. The Valley of Kashmir, which has 46 seats, is not a safe zone for the BJP. This way its future rested on the support of people from the Jammu region.
How do you expect people from the region of Jammu to support the BJP when the Saffron parivar has not been able to fulfill even one major demand of Jammuites? So initiate measures for providing good governance. Initiate measures for ending unemployment and regional discrimination failing which the BJP cannot expect to repeat the LAHDC performance even in the ensuing Local Bodies election.
