Axing of Mulberry trees: Authorities seeking to sweep under carpet

Srinagar: Oct: 25: As the authorities seem to hush up the issue, the residents of Nadirgund,Peerbagh seem angry over the axing of dozens of Mulberry trees by unknown men in broad-day light for illegal road widening over flood channel bund, authorities remaining silent.
"Sericulture Department is yet to visit the spot where dozens of mulberry trees were chopped down illegally by persons involving in land mafias," said a local resident, wishing anonymity.
"We can say it for sure that there is the backing of some high level government officials otherwise who can dare to take such steps in broader day light without any fear," he added.
Locals claim that deformation of flood channel bund for road winding has proven costly during recent floods. "If the axing of trees and the illegal land grabbing is not stopped, within few years we will not find any mulberry tree or an inch of agriculture land or the flood channel in the vicinity."
However, the officials feigned ignorance when questioned regarding the issue.
"I have not got any information about the damaging of bund andno one has complained about it, yet," said official of revenue department.
He added, "If any illegal construction on agricultural land has happened, that might have been done before I was deployed in this office. I have already pasteda notice in the area regarding any sort of construction on the agricultural land. However, if I found anyone breaching law, I will take a stern action against that person," he added.
Despite the chopping of mulberry trees the sericulture is not aware of this kind of crime, official of Sericulture department said, "I never received any such complaint about the cutting down of mulberry trees. I came to know about the issue from you. I will immediately sent deputy director and a team on the spot to look into the issue as I am myself in Jammu these days."
The officials at Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) say that they are keeping a keen eye to avoid illegal construction in the vicinity as it has been declared no construction zone under Wetland Act 1976.
"Before floods on concerned MLA's recommendation farmers were allowed to metalize the bund for connectivity but now scenario has completely changed. We are also on task to repair all boundaries protecting flood channels," said top official, I &FC.
He added, "The department has put barricaded to avoid heavy vehicle flow over the bund and have paste a notice at the spot. This flood channels diverts the water into Nambli Narkara which is 4500 Kanals. It plays a vital during the floods save the city."
