Hartal Politics: ‘Muster courage to defy diktats of self styled leaders’ | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 25: As life returned to normal after four days in Kashmir on Sunday separatists yet again called for a shutdown on October 27 (Tuesday) to protest against JK’s Accession Day with India. Life in Kashmir had come to a standstill on Wednesday (October 21). Since then schools, business establishments and financial institutions have been closed and people have been confined to the four walls of their houses. Separatists asking people to observe shutdown has become a routine as they feel that it’s the only way through which they can remain relevant and make their presence felt. Frequent shutdowns and strikes have hit the business community and have ruined the economy of Kashmir, which witnessed the worst floods of the century in September 2014. Shutdowns during the peak season this year have crippled the people of Kashmir. “We are fed up shutdowns and strikes called by the separatists. They seem least bothered about the problems faced by a common man. Kashmir has been observing shutdowns for the past 25-years just to satiate the ego of a few self styled leaders who at the behest of their bosses sitting across the Line of Control leave no chance to vitiate peace and add to the miseries of the masses,” said a businessman wishing not to be named. “We have to open our shops for one day on Monday and then we have to once again sit at our homes on Tuesday as separatists want to protest against the landing of Indian Army in Kashmir on this day in 1947. One fails to understand how can we sitting at home and giving up our daily chores have any effect on Indian Army. These shutdown calls are aimed at appeasing the mentors of separatists. It’s out of fear that a business man shuts his shop or buses remain off the roads. Otherwise all of us have realized the futility of shutdowns and strikes,” the businessman added. An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Shutdown and strike calls given by the separatists these days don’t evoke much response but the precautionary measures which administration takes to ensure that peace prevails leads to normal life getting disturbed. Strikes and shutdown hit the city centre Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas. In other areas people carry on with their daily chores without caring for the calls given by the separatists. However, sometimes shopkeepers are forced to close down their shops as the separatist sponsored stone pelters force them to do so.” Common people have to face immense hardships as they are caught between the devil and the deep sea. Shutdown calls evoke prompt response from the administration as restrictions are imposed to ensure that law and order is not disturbed. A Kashmir watcher said, “Separatists need to realize that strikes and shutdowns have no significance as no one bothers about whether shops remain open or closed in Kashmir. Neither can these strikes dilute the fact that JK is an integral part of India. Strikes and shutdowns only help separatists as by doing so they are able to get their stipend on time from the other side.” “Time has come for people of Kashmir to reject the hartal politics and join the race of development and prosperity. They need to revolt against these handful of people and muster courage to defy their diktats if they want this uncertainty to end,” the Kashmir watcher added.
