Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 25: Death of a neonate sparked violent protests in frontier district of Kupwara as the family members of the dead baby attacked the Kupwara hospital and blamed the doctors for the death of new born.
Sources told Early Times gynaecologist of Kupwara hospital performed an elective cesarean section on a patient. After performing the surgery doctors advised the family members of the new born to shift the baby to Srinagar as he needed specialized medicare. However, the baby died in G B Pant hospital.
Family members of the dead neonate claimed that had doctors paid attention towards the baby at Kupwara hospital they could have saved his life. "Doctors passed the buck and referred him to Srinagar," family members alleged.
The next of kin of the deceased infant, allegedly barged into Kupwara hospital and broke the window panes of operation theater and thrashed the doctors present there.
The Doctors Association of Kashmir claimed that infant didn't die due to the negligence of doctors.
"Patient was referred to Srinagar because there is no pediatrician available in the sole medical facility of the area. There are no pediatric care facilities available in the hospital and it is criminal to conduct deliveries in a hospital where pediatric care facilities are not available," the DAK spokesman said in a statement.
He claimed the baby died due to lack of neonatal care who could have been saved if pediatric care facilities were available in the hospital. "This is the fate of every infant who is referred to Srinagar from periphery as the golden minute is wasted in transit which is crucial for survival of these fragile neonates," he said. "Government rather than concentrating pediatric care facilities in Srinagar for minuscule population should provide pediatric care to rural areas which form the majority of population and where infants are dying on daily basis due to lack of neonatal care."
