Heating gadgets out in Kashmir, Gulmarg coldest with minus 3 | | | early times report Srinagar, Oct 25: Heating gadgets, including traditional Kangri are out in Kashmir valley, where upper reaches experienced snowfall and plains were lashed by rain, resulting in considerable drop in the mercury. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded coldest night of the season as the minimum temperature witnessed considerable drop and settled at minus 3 degree. Dozens of villages in north Kashmir were cut off with their respective district headquarters due to heavy snowfall. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there could be widespread rain in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region while fairly widespread in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours. Gulmarg received season first snowfall, though very light followed by rain during the past 24 hours. However, Affarwat, the highest skiing point, connected through Cable Car, Kongdori and Khilanmarg received moderate to heavy snowfall since yesterday. The minimum temperature at Gulmarg was minus 3, lowest of the season so far which was also five notches below normal. The maximum temperature at the famed ski resort yesterday was 6.7 degree, more than six notches below normal due to snowfall and icy cold winds. The upper reaches in north Kashmir, including areas near the Line of Control (LoC), also received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours. Dozens of far flung and remote areas, including near the LoC, were cut off with their respective headquarters due to more than one feet of snowfall. Pahalgam, the famed health resort in south Kashmir, about 100 km from here, received 15.2 mm rainfall while upper heights experienced snowfall. The holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni also received moderate to heavy snowfall. Shopian and Mughal road besides other heights in south Kashmir also received snowfall, while plains were lashed by rains. Life was affected due to intermittent rain during the past 24 hours, resulting in considerable cold in the summer capital, where the darbar, seat of the government will close on October 30 and 31 to reopen at winter capital on November 9. The maximum temperature yesterday in the city dropped to eight degrees below normal. Today there was no change in the weather as mercury remained below normal due to intermittent rain. Heating gadgets run by gas and electricity besides local Kangri are out because of very cold weather conditions. Very less number of people were out on the streets, enjoying Sunday in their homes because of severe cold outside. There is possibility of rain or thundershowers and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 12 and five degrees respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, the Met spokesman apped. |
