BJP undermines Buddhist-majority character of Leh to garner Muslim votes | Bihar election rally | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 25: No one had ever imagined that BJP would ever undermine the Buddhist-majority character of Leh district to garner Muslim votes in Bihar, but it actually did it. And it was none other Prime Minister Narendra Modi who undermined the Buddhist-majority character of Leh district in Ladakh to strike a chord with the Muslims of Bihar where the election campaign is in full swing. Addressing an election rally in the Bihar’s Chapra district this morning, Modi patted the BJP for its victory in the just-held elections to the powerful Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh. He said the BJP trounced the Congress despite the fact that 90 per cent population of the district constituted a minority (in this case Muslims). “The minority community constitutes 90 per cent population of Leh district. The BJP defeated the Congress and reduced its strength in the council from 22 in 2010 to just 5 in the just-held elections in Leh. The minority community voted en-block for the BJP candidates,” he said, adding that he was hopeful that the minority community in Bihar would also vote for the BJP-led NDA alliance in Bihar. Modi, it was clear from his speech, was not properly briefed by those in J&K who looked after the party affairs in Leh district and managed the party’s election campaign there. Had they given proper information to the Prime Minister, he would not have committed such a faux pas. Or should it be assumed that the Prime Minister willfully painted a wrong picture to influence the Muslim electorate in the crucial Bihar where the grand alliance of JDU, RJD and Congress giving a tough challenge to the NDA alliance? It is for the party leadership to explain as to why the BJP undermined the Buddhist-majority character of Leh district. The Leh district, it needs to be underlined, is a Buddhist-majority district with a considerable chunk of Muslim population. In the just-held elections, the Buddhists captured at least 25 seats out of the 26 contested seats. The Muslim candidates won two seats. One belonged to the NC and the other to the BJP. Two Muslim candidates, one each from BJP and NC, who made it to the Council, Ghulam Mehdi (NC) from Turtuk and Mumtaz Hussain (BJP) from Chuchot. As for the remaining seat, it was also captured by a Buddhist, who contested the election as an independent candidate. Dikshit seat went to independent candidate Tsering Angchuk. All this happened because the Buddhists constitute majority population in Leh district. They constitute a minority in the Kargil district and even in Kargil the Buddhists constitute a substantial chunk of population. |
