Prof Bhat cautions people to take measures in event of earthquake | | | BHADERWAH, Oct 26: Noted Earth Scientist, Prof GM Bhat, who is presently Rector of Bhaderwah Campus of Jammu University said although the possibility of a 7.0 Mw earthquake was a remote possibility in Chenab valley and other parts of the state but people should adopt all precautionary measures in advance to avoid deaths and destruction in such eventuality. As per press release, Prof GM Bhat said "The Chenab Valley region falls in seismic zone four and is prone to earthquakes. The area has been made more vulnerable by activities which have exerted further pressure on earth. It may lead to massive destruction in case of a tremor measuring 7 on Richter Scale hits the area," said Bhat said "Deforestation and construction of hydropower project dams have badly hit the ecology of the region. The intake capacity of soil to hold water molecules in Chenab valley has been gradually decreased due to construction of high storage capacity dams of power projects. The fallout is being witnessed in high frequency of landslides along the Jammu- Srinagar and Batote-Kishtwar highways," he said. |
