Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 26: People who show their proximity to the Chief Minister by remaining close to him, ran away for their lives when earth shook like a jelly this afternoon leaving the CM alone in a corner of the Tagore hall where they were watching a show. But commandos of the Jammu Kashmir police rushed to rescue the Chief Minister.
Witnesses said as the first tremor was felt, many from the audience started running out of the Hall, the first floor of which was jam-packed. But Mufti stood back sitting patiently on his chair in the first row, asking others including Education Minister Naeem Akhter, who was also present, to calm down and not to panic.
Within seconds, however, as the major tremors started shaking the old building, the SSG commandoes who escort the Chief Minister, at once rushed into the hall to rescue him.
In no time, they took Mufti out of the building, which was banging like a wooden box. The police tried to keep Mufti at a safe spot in the compounds of the Tagore Hall, a heritage building renovated after the last year floods.
Witnesses said Mufti was made to sit in the bullet proof car as people could be seen running for cover amid cries from all sides. "But it was really inspiring to see the commandoes uphold their duty when it was needed the most. When everyone ran for personal safety, police ensured CM's safety," said an eyewitness.
A witness said some commandos even offered water to Mufti who looked worried as cries could be heard from all around with people trying to seek mercy of the Almighty.
After a few minutes, when things comparatively calmed down and the CM's cavalcade got a nod for movement, Mufti was straight rushed to his Fairview residence in the heels of Shankaracharya hills.
Mufti was at Tagore Hall to attend the program organized by the Education Department in connection with the Centenary Celebrations of J&K's iconic poet and teacher, Dina Nath Nadim.
Mufti couldn't make a speech as the program had to be aborted midway. Others who were present include, Secretary Cultural Academy Dr Aziz Hajni, poet and Gyan Peeth Awardee, Rehman Rahi, former broadcaster Farooq Nazki, besides a galaxy of poets, scholars and family members of late Dina Nath Nadim were present on the occasion.
The SSG is the special wing of police, which looks after the security of Chief Minister. The SSG commandoes, like other ranks of Jammu and Kashmir Police, are known for their bravery and commitment towards the duty.
