After facing humiliating defeat Mir looks for excuses | LAHDC Polls | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 26: After facing a humiliating defeat in the LAHDC polls, Congress is looking for excuses to save its face, the new JKPCC Chief G A Mir, who took over from Prof Saifuddin Soz earlier this year, with the promise of "revolutionizing the party" on Monday tried to downplay the defeat saying, "BJP's UT promise will prove counterproductive for the party and eventually tend to hinder the attainment of their political goals in the region." Mir toed the line of National Conference working president, Omar Abdullah, who during his tenure as the Chief Minister did not pay any attention towards the development of the hilly district and has no right to speak for the nationalist Jammu province and patriotic Ladakh region. Omar on Sunday had claimed that BJP won the Leh council by holding out a promise that the BJP, if voted to power, will dismember the state by conferring on Ladakh the status of UT. "How disingenuous of the Hon PM to forget to tell the people of Bihar that his party promised to dismember J&K for votes in Ladakh," Omar wrote on micro-blogging site, Twitter. However, the JKPCC Chief admitted that despite Congress ruling Leh for 12 years, party did not encourage the demand for Union territory. He boasted that party managed three consecutive victories in the Council polls on the development plank. An analyst while talking to Early times said, "Had Leh witnessed development during the past 12 years, Congress would not have been decimated in the LAHDC polls. Congress had 21 seats and BJP had won only 4 seats in the last elections. This time around BJP has won 18 seats and Congress has been able to retain only 5 seats. NC stands nowhere with 2 seats." The analyst said that LAHDC polls were litmus test for the new JKPCC Chief G A Mir but he has failed miserably. "Now he is trying to hide behind excuses. He (Mir) should own the moral responsibility for the defeat and tender his resignation from the top post of the party," he added. A Congress leader wishing anonymity said, "We had apprised the JKPCC chief on many occasions about the dictatorial approach of the MLA Leh, Nawan Rigzin Jora. He (Mir) never paid any heed towards our pleas just to keep his friend (Jora) happy." |
