Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 26: Around 300 doctors are likely to be terminated from service for remaining absent from their duties for years together.
Most of the absent doctors figuring on a list prepared by the Government are presently working in private health sector in the country and abroad, particularly in Gulf countries, sources told Early Times.
A senior official said the termination orders would be notified from next week after an assessment report by the Health Department, which has sent final notices to the doctors.
He said the Government has also decided to refer the posts, which will be vacant after the order is implemented, to the Public Service Commission for filling them up.
"In the last three years, the Health Department has served repeated notices to around 300 specialist doctors who are absent from their duties. Though some of them have rejoined their services, most of the doctors are not willing to return," said the official. He said it was time to take strict action against these doctors who have taken the Government for granted.
The official said the brain drain is a matter of worry as the Government has invested a lot of money in training these doctors. "Termination is necessary as hundreds of doctors are unemployed and can be adjusted," he said.
Meanwhile, a doctor who is working in Saudi Arabia held the Government responsible for the brain drain. "A doctor who joins the Health Department in the State gets around Rs 22,000 per month but he gets more than Rs 50,000 in a private hospital in other States," he said.
Blaming the State Government for framing faulty policies, the doctor said the transfer of doctors from their native areas was also responsible for the mess in the health sector.
"It is not only the high salary and perks but also the professional and research atmosphere outside the State which encourages doctors to move out," he added.
