HC grants Govt more time to file reply to Masrat Alam's petition

srinagar, Oct 26: The state High Court on Monday granted 10 more days to the government to file reply to a petition filed against fresh detention under Public Safety Act (PSA) of senior leader of hardline Hurriyat Conference Masarat Alam.
The time was granted by a single bench of the court comprising Justice Hasnain Massodi on petition by Alam who was arrested on April 17 in connection with raising of Pakistani flags and chanting of anti-national slogans during a rally organised by the Hurriyat to welcome its chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani from New Delhi.
Police had registered a case against several separatist leaders including Alam and Geelani for provocative activities including hoisting of Pakistani flag.
Later, Alam was booked under PSA, but the High Court quashed the detention order and ordered his release. However the state government slapped a fresh detention against him.
After remain in jail for four years in connection with 2010 summer agitation in the Valley, Alam was released on March 7, six days after the PDP-led government came to power. His release had created a uproar across country and the issue had even figured in the Parliament proceedings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a statement on the floor of the house that centre was taken into confidence to by the state government.
Presently lodged in Kotbalwal Jail Jammu, Alam has been booked under PSA for more than 20 occasions after his first detention under the Act on Oct 2, 1990.
