Kashmir highway re-opens, Mughal Road remains closed due to snow
10/27/2015 12:58:09 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 26: Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was resumed today after remaining suspended since last evening due to landslides and shooting stones triggered by rain. However, the historic Mughal Road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed due to heavy snowfall for the second day today. "We have allowed traffic from both Srinagar and Jammu this morning," a traffic police official told.
He said traffic was suspended last evening following landslides and mudslides at several places between Ramban and Ramsu due to heavy rains. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, linking the Valley with the rest of the country, put into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the debris. He said the road was now through as all the debris were removed. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, stranded on the highway on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, were allowed to proceed towards their respective destinations since early this morning.
Vehicles were also allowed to enter from both sides, he said, adding that all passengers and drivers who are scheduled to travel on the highway are requested to contact Traffic Control Rooms (TCRs) before starting journey. However, he said, the 84-km-long Shopian and Rajouri and Poonch Mughal road remained closed due to heavy snowfall. There was one to two feet of snowfall at several places on the road, he said, adding that the local administration has already started snow clearance machines to put through the road. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the Peer-ki-Gali, where there was still more than a feet of snow.
