Ladakh region remains cut off from Kashmir, hundreds stranded | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 26: The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley remained closed for the second day today due to heavy snowfall at Zojila pass and other places, following which hundreds of vehicles remained stranded. A traffic police official told here today that the highway remained closed though Border Roads Organisation which is responsible for the maintenance of the highway has already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow. There was about half a feet snow at Sonmarg and one and half a feet at Zojila pass, he said, adding at Meenmarg eight inches of snow had accumulated yesterday. He said the snow clearance operation was going on. But, he said, there is a threat of avalanches due to which traffic will be resumed only after taking all precautionary measures to avoid any accident. Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass. Only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations when a green signal is received from BRO and traffic police personnel deployed at different places. |
