| Potholed roads: Locals left irked over poor performance of R&B deptt | | |  M S Nazki

Poonch, Oct 31: Resentment among locals across the Poonch district is brewing as majority of roads are in dilapidated condition and are dotted with potholes giving a bumpy and dusty ride to the daily commuters and forcing vehicles to move at snail's pace consuming precious time of commuters. The residents are up in arms against Roads and Buildings (R&B) department as well as GREF authorities alleging callous approach towards their miseries caused due to poor road network.
"Roads and Building (R&B) Department is receiving crores of funds every year for the maintenance purpose, but the department has utterly failed completely to improve the poor conditions of roads in Naka Manghari area of Poonch ,"lamented one Ejaz Ahmad, a resident of locality. Ejaz also mentioned that the road conditions in and around Poonch city are shabby and bad what to talk of the link roads in the up-country and peripheral areas.
Citing examples of interior roads in Mendhar and Balakote, another local said there are dozens of roads which are in shambles and repeated requests from locals have just received only verbal assurances every time while nothing of that sort has happened till the filing of the report. Talking to Early Times, locals said, "We fail to understand that why government is not fulfilling their promises. In past announcement that huge funds would be sanctioned to repair and construct the roads in the district but all this remain confined to papers only reasons better known to official at the helms of affairs.
Irked locals also lamented that the roads from Harni Nar road, Balakote to Dharati and other 15 villages Panjani, Sowala, Kalar Mohra in dilapidated condition. "The department seems to be in deep slumber with poor utilization of funds taking place since the past two years, locals added. "The money provided by Government of India (GoI) under various schemes has several times lapsed due to poor utilization," said residents of Mendhar. Another local resident said that despite tall claims the department of R&B is not able to use funds properly due to many reasons and one of the main reasons is they are not willing to utilize the funds at ground level. He also alleged that R&B has utterly failed to provide proper road connectivity in Poonch district which connects Harni and other peripheral areas. |
