NC's secularism has destroyed J&K
Religious cleansing in Valley
11/1/2015 12:41:10 AM
ET Report
jammu, Oct 31: It is generally believed that Kashmir witnessed persecution of the miniscule Hindus and its migration in January 1990. It's not a belief well-founded. What happened in 1990 was just a completion of the process of religious cleansing of the minorities unleashed by the fanatics in Kashmir in 1947, when Jawaharlal Nehru conspired against the nation in general and Jammu in particular and handed over the State power to Sheikh Abdullah - who had turned to him after he failed to throw in the lot of Kashmir and Kashmiri Muslims with Pakistan and who was known for his ultra-sectarian views and anti-Dogra formulations. Not only the oppressed and persecuted Hindus, the Dogras, original inhabitants of Jammu but settled in Kashmir for decades and many Sikhs, started migrating from the Valley immediately after October 1947. While bulk of them made the highly accommodating and liberal Jammu their home, the others migrated to other parts of the country, especially Delhi.
The Government of Sheikh Abdullah evolved and implemented social, economic, political, administrative and employment policies which left many Kashmiri Hindus, almost all the Dogras and a number of Sikh families with no other option but to quit Kashmir and become refugees in their own country. It needs to be underlined that the process of setting up colonies in Jammu by the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and Sikh started in the 1940s and not in 1990. It is also important to note that Kashmir became one-religion and one-community region in 1990, with the entire Kashmiri leadership contributing to the process of religious cleansing. The NC leadership, which enjoyed the full backing of the Congress, played the most significant role in this regard. Panun Kashmir leadership has repeatedly called the bluff of Sheikh Abdullah, his son Farooq Abdullah and his grandson Omar Abdullah, saying "all the three were sinners, as each one of them contributed to the hilt to the process of religious cleansing of the non-Muslims".
The NC claims that Jammu & Kashmir is not a communal State and that if true secularism exists anywhere in the world, it is Kashmir and Kashmir alone. Its leadership also claims that all the social groups in the State are part and parcel of the polity and its Governments didn't discriminate between social groups and communities. The Kashmiri secularism treats all the social groups and communities equally and the polity which the NC set up by Sheikh Abdullah was based on the principle of justice and equity.
That Kashmir, which was once 100 per cent Hindu, is today more than 99 per cent Muslim should lay bare the disparities between what the NC says and the ground realities in Kashmir. Indeed, the history of Kashmir is one of persecution, oppression, suppression and migration of the minority communities. The NC talks about its commitment to India, democracy and secularism. Its leadership only becomes an object of ridicule and contempt by making such a spurious claim. The NC leadership has never allowed democracy to flow in the State. It, in collaboration with the Congress, has all along subverted democracy and rigged the elections. They and their regressive ideology is responsible for all the troubles facing the nation in Kashmir and the prevailing unrest in Jammu province.
The NC's unflinching faith in the divisive, communal, anti-people and anti-democratic Article 370; its anti-Indian Constitution age-old stand; its stand that Jammu & Kashmir only acceded and not merged with India; its demand for pre-1953 politico-Constitutional status (semi-independence) on the ground that Jammu & Kashmir is Muslim-majority; its hostile attitude towards the Indian Army and such legislations as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA); its flat refusal to grant citizenship rights to the refugees from Pakistan (mostly Dalits); its insistence on the atrocious State subject laws which deprive the children of the daughters of the State married to non-State subjects of their right to inherit their mother's property and obtain Government jobs in the State; its insistence on a cruel and insensitive regime that bars the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, the Other Backward Classes and the minority communities from exercising rights which are available to their counterparts in the rest of the country; its policies which have rendered the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region unreal and ineffective for all purposes and made their life a veritable hell on earth; the loud clamours in Jammu and Ladakh in favour of reorganisation of the State on a regional basis suggesting they cannot have any kind of truck with the communal Kashmiri leadership; and so on should establish that what the NC leadership says is absolutely wrong.
