Infighting at Durga Nag takes sheen off shrine
11/1/2015 12:40:43 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, Oct 31: The infighting between two managing committees is eating up vitals of Durga Nag Shrine at Srinagar which is an ancient seat of Adi Guru Shankaracharya and where a temple of Goddess Durga exists from time immemorial.
According to sources, the mismanagement of the shrine especially after the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits has put it to a heavy loss with some people forcibly occupying the premises. The management as well as the Government have failed to vacate the occupied premises till date.
Sources said the Shrine property is in shambles as some of its employees and Management Committee members are making a hay without caring for the development of the shrine.
They said the seat of Adi Guru Shankaracharya, Durga Nag is one of the ancient shrines of Kashmiri Pandits and it has property worth hundreds of crores. But unfortunately some of its property in the shape of shops and buildings have been grabbed by vested elements and muscle men in connivance with the members of Management Committee.
Sources said the State of affairs of the Shrine has become a cause of concern among entire KP community which is demanding constitution of Board for proper management of Hindu shrines in Kashmir as some vested elements and musclemen have taken control of many Hindu shrines in Valley to grab their property and sell it to the land mafia in league with the officials.
Sources said that if the assets of Durga Nag are property channalized its annual income will help in establishment of a full fledged University, a medical or engineering college for the community which can be an income generating unit besides providing employment to community youth.
The community instead of depending on the Government could have easily been able to make a solid base for its youth by establishing institutions on the income generated from the shrines in Valley on the pattern of Mata Vaishno Devi or other shrines run in South.
The Durga Nag Shrine can also help in establishment of more institutions for the community in future if it is properly managed. But some vested and self styled elements have taken the control of the shrine to make their own fortunes, sources added.
Sources said earlier the Management Committee in late nineties purchased a piece of land at Jammu to establish the community centre on the name of shrine but that community centre is also in shambles and there is no account of the income received in the shape of annual marriage ceremonies and other functions held there.
The community centre is in bad shape. There is no proper management which takes care of it. A piece of land was purchased some years ago for its expansion but later due to dispute with the land lord, the land has been lost. The management said that it has made the payment in full while the landlord says that he has not received a single pie till date. There is no evidence that management has paid money to land lord or not as the members of the Trust have not taken the receipt for the same from landlord while in their ledgers the entry has been made that money has been paid to land lord in full.
Denying that he has received the money the land lord removed the fencing of the Trust and took the land in his control.
Likewise land for construction of a Pharmaceutical College near Raipur was purchased over 10 years back by the former president of the Trust for Rs 50 lakh. According to sources the money was paid but Trust failed to get possession of the land and it is now running in a dispute with the result the Trust suffered a heavy loss.
Sources said the community activists as well as social workers in Jammu and outside have taken a serious exception to it and they have decided to take control of the shrine for the overall interests of Hindu Samaj in general and KPs in particular.
