'Maverick' Dr Farooq Abdullah wants to be peace monger between India, Pakistan | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 31: National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah wants to be a peace monger between India and Pakistan and it is due to this reason that he in the recent past has been advocating dialogue between the two neighbouring countries. Interacting here with a delegation that has come from Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), Dr. Abdullah said that peace holds key to the progress of India and Pakistan. He said that dialogue alone can lead to the resolution of the problems being confronted by the two neighbouring countries. He also advocated for simplifying the procedure related to cross Line of Control (LoC) visit. It would be in place to mention here that when he was heading the Government in Jammu & Kashmir the National Conference President would go all out against Pakistan. He on more than one occasions asked then Government of India to carry out bombing of the neighbouring country so that the 'issue' is settled once for all. Not long ago, Dr. Abdullah had demanded killing of the separatist leaders and throwing their bodies in Jhelum since according to him not much space was available in the jails in the State. He was quite vocal against the people who wanted secession from the Union of India. But of late, he has developed a soft corner towards these people. National Conference led by its President has been taking a dig at the present coalition dispensation of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for denying space to separatist leadership. People as such are perplexed as who is the real Farooq Abdullah? Is it the one who recommended bombing of Pakistan or the one who advocates dialogue with the neighbouring country? People in general and political analysts in particular believe that the change in stance of NC and its President is due to the fact that the party is no more enjoying the power in State. By issuing pro-separatist statements the party wants to be in good books of the people of Kashmir. National Conference is no longer being viewed as the leading mainstream party of the State. Dr. Abdullah wants to enjoy 'privileges' of the Government and for the same he knows he cannot ignore the overall sentiment of Kashmiris. He has to show sympathy for the separatist leadership since his fate of returning to power depends upon the votes it gets from the Kashmir valley. In the 2104 Assembly elections National Conference got more than 80 percent seats from the Kashmir valley with the party winning just two seats from Jammu division. Pertinently, the NC leaders have also been targeting the PDP for forging an alliance with BJP saying that a 'free hand' has been given to RSS and its activists in the State. However, the party leaders conveniently forget that NC was a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP with Atal Bihari Vajpayee being the Prime Minister of the country. As such the party does not have any moral right to criticize PDP for joining hands with BJP. |
