Police foils ABVP, PDP student wing protest against JU's VC | | | Asif Iqbal Naik

Kishtwar, Oct 31: Police on Saturday foiled an attempt by ABVP activists and student wing of PDP to disrupt a function of the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Prof R D Sharma here. Both students' bodies were holding protest inside Kishtwar college campus over various issues pertaining to Kishtwar college and against the suspension of three university students affiliated with the ABVP. Reports said members of ABVP's Kishtwar unit led by their president Sourab Kotwal and PDP student wing led by its district president Muddassir Ahanger along with college students held strong protest against the VC, demanding immediate revocation of suspension of the three students affiliated. They were also demanded filling up of vacant posts of lecturers at Kishtwar college. As soon the students began their march, the police swung into action and stopped the students from coming outside the campus. The police sealed the college gate to prevent the protestors from disrupting the ongoing function. Besides Prof Sharma, those who were present during the function included MoS Revenue and R&B Sunil Sharma, MLC Firdous Tak and DC Kishtwar Ghulam Nabi Balwan. After continuing their protests for nearly one hour, the agitating students were allowed to meet the VC and put forth their demand before him. The students urged the VC to order immediate revocation of suspension of the three students and the issue of shortage staff in Kishtwar college. They also demanded completion of syllabus in BA/B.Sc as examination is to be held in December, and urged the VC to order for continuation of classes in winter as well. In response to the demand of revocation of suspension of the three students, the VC remained non-committal. Meanwhile, president Public Awareness Front Kishtwar Shakir Hussain Siddiqui has slammed the mismanagement during the campus function. Siddiqui said that though the programme was organized by the Kishtwar University Campus to promote Urdu language, not a single Urdu scholar was invited. He said the function was "only organized to mint funds." |
