PDP leaders divided over PM's financial package
11/1/2015 12:41:32 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 31: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce a multi-crore development package for J&K, the ruling PDP leadership is divided over the issue, with some saying that November 7, when Modi makes the announcement in Srinagar, will be a "decisive day."
Sources said on this day, some of the senior PDP leaders, who over the months have been unconvinced with the performance of the coalition Government and often stay away from party meetings, would take a final call on quitting or staying back in the party.
One such leader, who also happens to be a Member Parliament, is understood to have conveyed to his party loyalists that he was only waiting for the results of Modi's announcement to decide about his future course of action.
Sources said the MP, who is mostly camping in Srinagar, recently called a meeting of his loyalists and also held deliberations with his advisors from the civil society to decide future course of action. "It was finally resolved that we'll wait for the announcement to be made on November 7," said a party insider.
Amid speculations that Modi will announce Rs 70,000 crore package or Rs 90, 000 crore package, some of the senior PDP leaders believe that if the considerable portion of the package is not dedicated as rehabilitation package for September 2014 floods, the development would fail to convince the flood victims, who essentially form their vote bank.
The PDP leaders see the package as the "last resort to bounce back in their constituencies", which have by and large been unsatisfied with the performance of the coalition in the last eight months.
Some of the senior leaders believe that PDP banked on "wrong and immature faces" for deliberations with the Central Government over the finalization of the package and instead should have reposed faith in veterans like Muzaffar Hussain Beigh.
The party sources said on behalf of the PDP, three of its Cabinet Ministers, all of them new to the field of politics, have been holding deliberations with the PM's Office in New Delhi with regard to the finalization of the package.
Sources said it was these three Ministers, who have been convincing the party high command that the package would be in line with the party vote bank requirements.
After all these months of deliberations Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed earlier this month called on Modi in the national capital seeking development package. Sources, however, said Mufti didn't divulge into details of the package with the PM and instead relied on his "core team", which has been finalizing the details in line with the needs of the party.
Sources said on October 21 when PDP President Mehbooba Mufti hosted a party meeting at her Fairview residence here, the party cadres mostly raised the issue of the development package to be announced by the PM.
Mehbooba had asked the Ministers and legislators to focus on strengthening the party at grassroots but the party cadres had responded that announcement of development package would play a crucial role in this regard.
