Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Mughal Road closed due to landslides | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 4: The 300 km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed down for vehicular traffic after heavy rains triggered fresh landslides ahead of the high profile visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ramban on November 7. The alternate route via Mughal road was also closed down following fresh spell of snowfall in higher reaches of Peer ki Gali. Hundreds of passenger and commercial vehicles were stranded at several places on the highway following road blockade at Ramsoo and Ramban. After accessing the ground reports from different vulnerable stretches the traffic police authorities decided to close down the highway for vehicular traffic early wednesday morning. "We have closed the highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country keeping in mind the safety of the passengers," a senior traffic police officer posted in Ramban said. He said the road clearance operation launched by Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway were hampered by continuous rainfall in the area. Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers got stranded on both sides of the road. As and when the road is put through, stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations before allowing fresh traffic from Srinagar and Jammu, he said. |
