SRINAGAR, Nov 4: Despite too much hype attached to the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the State on November 7, people of Kashmir are not very enthused about the proposed visit and they have their own reasons for the same.
Majority of the people say that Prime Minister had many opportune moments in the past one year to announce a package for the flood hit people of the State. These people say that given the past experience there is not much hope that any package would be announced by Modi for the flood affected people.
"The devastating deluge hit the State in September 2014 and since then more than 14 months have passed by. Ideally the package should have been announced during last year with the onset of winter. The flood hit people have by their own ways and means managed to tide over the crisis and they have already started their life afresh," said Ghulam Qadir, a resident of Chattabal.
Qadir like many other Kashmiris believes that there are not many takers of the proposed package for flood hit people. He said that months have passed ever since the NITI Aayog submitted that Jammu & Kashmir suffered losses to the tune of Rs. 11,000 crores due to the floods, but still then no action whatsoever has been taken.
"It may be true that the package proposal of Rs. 44,000 crores submitted by the previous National Conference-Congress coalition Government was full of errors, but the same had to be replaced by a more meaningful exercise. Since NITI Aayog has brought down the losses to the tune of Rs. 11,000 crores it was the duty of the Central Government to announce the package in tune with the same at the earliest, but that was not to be and people continue to suffer," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Rajbagh.
Masses in Kashmir are also not buoyed by the expectations that the Prime Minister would extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan. The people say that there is a lot of difference between Modi and BJP stalwart and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who chose Srinagar for extending hand of friendship to Pakistan in 2003.
"Vajpayee was a statesman and even though he was a BJP man his actions never suggested that he considers Pakistan as an enemy. On the other hand ever since Modi has become the Prime Minister there is a general perception that tensions have heightened between India and Pakistan. In such a scenario how can one expect that Modi would sound the bugle of peace with Pakistan from Srinagar," said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Karan Nagar.
Although, PDP and BJP leaders are claiming that the people of Kashmir are waiting for Modi to come over here, truth of matter is that there is not much hope attached with the visit of Prime Minister. People in general are hoping that the day passes off peacefully since separatists have given a call for million march on the same day.
