Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 4: Taking cognizance of a report about 'unlicensed' sand digger's reprehensible acts in the dead of night along the banks of Jhelum in Srinagar, the district administration has issued strict instructions to police to deal 'sand mafia' with iron hands. Reliable sources said the report 'Sand diggers play ghosts to scare Srinagar people' that appeared in Early Times on November 3, has prompted the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to ask police to take strict action against the sand mafia. This newspaper had reported that illegal sand diggers have unleashed a reign of terror by making spine-chilling noises in the dead of night which has created a sense of insecurity among the people living along Jhelum embankments. The residents had alleged that sand diggers not only excavate sand illegally during night but also steal valuables from residential houses. Sources said the district administration has taken serious note of the report and issued stringent directions to departments concerned and police as well to look into the complaints of the people. When contacted Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Lone told Early Times that the issue will be looked into seriously and stern actions will be taken against 'unlicensed' sand diggers. "We have taken note of the complaint and instructions have been issued to police and other departments to look into the issue. Anyone found guilty will be dealt with iron hands," Lone said. It's worth mentioning that the sand diggers in order to continue illegal sand excavation from Jhelum are making frightening noises in the dead of night so that people remain indoors and their crime remains unexposed. Locals allege the sand mafia has made their lives miserable as they could not move out of their houses till 8 am. They also allege that illegal extraction of sand is going unabated on a vast expanse of Jhelum along its main embankment at Zero Bridge and Shivpora areas. The sand mafia has also hired goons to quell any resistance from people. "We are not against dredging of Jhelum but these persons are openly looting sand which fetches them over Rs 5,000 per truckload. Haphazard sand extraction causes huge losses to state exchequer as it is deprived of royalty," they said. |
