When will Jammu Police wake up from its deep slumber....? | Cases of drug addiction/chain snatchings | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 4: While City of Temples is being gradually pushed towards the darkness of drug menace by drug-mafia, Police seems to be in no hurry to check the anti-social activities! If one goes by the sequence of incidents happened in the recent past, it becomes crystal clear that the upsurge in the crime rate is directly related with drugs, which are eating the vitals of our society. Shockingly, despite observing all these ill-developments, Jammu police seems to be least bothered to take a call. Number of prominent persons of our civil society are of the view that "either the police are sleeping or they are hand-in-glove with the drug-mafia. " Pertinent to mention here that on October 2, City South, Police claimed to have busted a gang of chain snatchers by arresting five persons from the outskirts of Jammu city. Police at that time claimed that five chain snatchers, who used to snatch chains from unsuspected women to meet their need for drugs, were arrested in Gandhi Nagar area. They used to roam on motor-bikes or cars in that area and whenever they used to identify lonely woman, they struck and managed to escape with gold chains. Those who were arrested were identified as Varun Kohli and Danish Gandotra from the Bakshi Nagar locality, and Rohit Sodhi, Sunil Charak and Sunil Kumar also from Jammu. After claiming that they have busted the gang of chain-snatchers, Police earned appreciation from general public following which, it put a full stop on the investigation especially from that angle where the said youths received drugs? Who are the suppliers of the drugs in different parts of the city? Why police did not follow up and tried to take the lead to catch hold of the real culprits-drug-mafia-which is forcing youths first to become addict and then indulge in crimes to earn them money? Are some of the questions being discussed in each and every nook and corner of the city and its peripheral areas. Similarly, in the latest incident, on October 28, City North Police claimed to have busted a gang of chain snatchers and recovered three gold chains. The accused were identified as Munish Gupta, Anubhav Khajuria and Gourav Bali of Jammu. Police further claimed that they were active from the last one year and had snatched chains in Subash Nagar, Vikas Nagar, Gurha Bakshi Nagar areas. Out of the three, two arrested accused are students of Engineering and are also drug-addicts. They used to snatch chains to fulfil their lust for drugs. Again after earning great compliments from the city residents, Police opted to put a full stop on the case. In all the above discussed cases, Police have not come up with a big scoop of unearthing drug-mafia operating in Jammu. Why police is not tracing the hideouts of drug-mafia? Highly placed sources in Police Department revealed to Early Times that though the police higher-ups are taking keen interest in wiping out the drug menace but certain lower rung Cops are hand-in-glove with drug mafia and whenever any lead is developed to nab them, they leak the information to the drug peddlers who either goes underground or shift their consignments to a safer den. Who will finally bell the Cat? It is a million dollar question posed by the people of Jammu. |
