BANIHAL, Nov 4: The increase in rates of grass seed (oats Kent) variety has forced most of the poor farmers here and the other adjacent areas not to buy this seed.
The rate for the grass seed is double than the previous year.
A group of farmers said that this year the agriculture department on their seed centres provided the farmers the grass seed (oats -Kent) variety at the rate of Rs. 47 per kilogram on subsidized rates. The farmers said that they purchased the same seed at the rate of Rs. 20 per kilogram on the same control rates from the seed stores of the department.
The farmers said that unbelievable increase and hike in the rates of grass seed has forced them to take a tough decision. These farmers have decided not to purchase the seed on so high rates and as such the cultivation season is all set to be affected. Maximum farmers in district Ramban during the winter season cultivate the grass in their fields for grazing their animals and some are cultivated for business purposes.
The increase and hike in the rates of grass seeds this year had added to the hardships of the poor farmers.
"I purchased the seed of the grass for Rs. 20 per kilogram in 2014 and this year when we went to the seed store of agriculture department in Banihal for buying the same seed we were told that for this year the rate is Rs. 47 per kilogram.
This is more than the double of last year's rate," said Bahar Ahmed Dar, resident of Darpora-Banihal.
Shakeel Ahmed, a farmer of Chareel Banihal said that most of the farmers have decided to leave their cultivated fields uncultivated in this winter season due to increase in rates of this seed.
When contacted an officer of the agriculture department said that the rates were decided by the higher authorities of the department and they can't do anything on the same. The official said that due to hike in rates of the seed very less farmers take interest to buy this seed this year.
"Previously a huge rush of farmers could be seen during the sale of this grass seed outside the seed stores of department.
But this year very few customers have turned up to purchase this seed and the primary reason for the same is the hike in rate of seed," said the official.
