Merger of JSM with BJP caused dilution of statehood demand | Was conviction of RSS, Virender Gupta on pseudo lines…? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 4: As resentment growing against BJP in Jammu region afresh on Kashmir centric policies and approach of the alliance government, the slogan of separate statehood coined by an organisation years back is the fresh undercurrent with many looking upon it as the only refuge to rid Jammu of discrimination. Jammu State Morcha which was in the forefront of the movement having disappeared from the scene, this slogan has gone into oblivion. The moot question is who created JSM and for what purpose and who allowed the slogan fade away from the political scene. It was ahead of Assembly elections last year when Jammu State Morcha, the 15-year-old political outfit which had been advocating the issue of statehood for Jammu region merged with BJP, people in Jammu were made to believe that the party would mitigate the miseries and discrimination meted out on political fronts. It was a calibrated and well calculated move by the then chairman Virender Gupta to join the party fold, no matter until that happened he used to be strong critic of the BJP and opponent of the political approach of the party while it was in opposition. Virender Gupta even contested elections in the year 2002 from Jammu West against the official candidate of BJP, a move which political observers believe became one of the main reason for BJP not registering victory on the seat since votes on almost alike issues got divided. However, this took a reverse turn soon after the merger of JSM with BJP. Not only did Virender Gupta join BJP formally in presence of senior leaders, he was in no time made party spokesperson too. A formal function was organised to welcome the new entrants from the outfit in presence of senior leader Avinash Rai Khanna, incharge of BJP. When JSM merged with BJP and its leaders came into party fold, the BJP leaders vehemently eulogized at that time that more and more people would joinBJP as the Modi wave has made them to realise that BJP was the need of the hour and parties like Congress, NC and PDP need to be shown the door for policies which resulted into mis-governance, nepotism, corruption, discrimination with Jammu and Ladakh. Pertinently, Virender Gupta as chairman of JSM had been strongly advocating carving out of a new 'Jammu state' out of the present Jammu and Kashmir and projecting this as an genuine and viable demand of the people of Jammu region. The political argument in support of this demand he would give was that the discrimination meted to Jammu by the Kashmir politicians would end by this move. However, both the slogan and the argument vanished in air after he joined BJP. As spokesman he comes out with occasional statements on certain issues. One wonders at the role of RSS which was originally instrumental in floating JSM all the for the separate statehood demand of Jammu. JSM, it may be recalled was originally floated by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh when its leaders met in Kurukhsetra and passed a resolution in support of a separate Jammu state in 2000. Amid a scenario when Jammu is facing no change in its status and share from the government in many spheres, people are prompted to ask was the conviction of RSS as well as Virender Gupta false and pseudo approach to befool the masses. |
