Encounter breaks out in Kupwara, 4-5 militants 'trapped' | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report KUPWARA, Nov 16: A gun battle started between militants and security forces along Line of Control in this frontier district of North Kashmir this evening. A senior police official said that Army's 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Para commandos launched a massive search operation after a group of 4-5 militants of Lashkar-e Toiba militant outfit gave slip to them on last Friday at Payerpathi village near Line of Control (LoC). The official said that on Monday evening the joint team of security forces intercepted the same militant group at Behakh forest area near Kumkadi village. He said the group had infiltrated during the intervening night of October 30 and 31. "The group was successful in giving slip to the security forces and was trapped due to heavy rains and snowfall in the mountains area of Kupwara district. But the same group got trapped today and following this an encounter started in the evening today," said the police official. He said the encounter was on when last reports came in. The official said that preventing infiltration during the winters is a major challenge for the security forces as foggy conditions and extreme cold bring visibility to zero. It is pertinent to mention here that on November 13 an Army jawan was injured in an encounter with militants in the forests of Kupwara district. While as body of a Lashkar-e Toiba militant, Sajad Bhai of Multan Pakistan was recovered near the Line of Control by Army on Nov 10 in the same district. The body was found by Army troops of 41 RR during a search operation which was going on in forest areas of Trumnad and Kumkadi in Safawali sector. |
