Demand of division in Jammu divides Kashmiri opinion-makers | For and against trifurcation | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 16: The demand in Jammu and Ladakh for three-way split of J&K has rattled the Kashmiri separatists and the fake mainstream Kashmiri parties like the NC, the Congress and the CPI-M. They have all opposed the idea of the State's division and accused the votaries of the State's trifurcation and the Valley's bifurcation as "divisive". They have declared that they will not allow these "divisive" forces to succeed. Even on Saturday, the demand for the division of the State was opposed both in Srinagar and Jammu. In Jammu, the provincial president of the NC lambasted those demanding division of the State. "While emphasizing upon the significant role of opinion makers in building a harmonious society by preserving and strengthening its time-tested characteristics of amity, tranquility and brotherhood," provincial president of the NC said at Nagrota (Jammu) that "proponents of trifurcation of J&K are the enemies of State". He only spoke the language of his Kashmiri masters - Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah - who stand thoroughly discredited both in Ladakh and Jammu. In Srinagar, the separatist outfit Kashmir Centre for Social Development Studies Centre (KCSDSC), which is headed by separatist Nayeem Khan's separatist wife Hamida Nayeem, condemned those in Jammu who had been demanding division of the State to end discrimination with the people of Jammu and Ladakh. Shakeel Qalendar, member of separatist KCSDSC, said in the KCSDSC-held seminar attacked the State Government for not reining in Panthers Party chief patron Bhim Singh and BJP leader Prof Hari Om. "The Government must answer how come people like Bhim Singh, Hari Om and others frequently and openly come up with the idea of trifurcating the State," he said. He also charged the PDP-BJP coalition Government with not respecting its commitment on Article 370. "PDP and BJP had promised people and mentioned it on CMP that Article 370 will not be discussed anywhere till the Government is in power but recently BJP in Ladakh Union Territory (status) to Ladakh". "These are indications how BJP and RSS are trying to divide us," he further said. If Kashmiri separatists and Kashmiri parties like the NC, the Congress and the CPI-M have been opposing the division demand in Jammu and Ladakh, opinion makers in Kashmir have expressed themselves differently. For example, Ghulam Nabi Khayal, a prominent writer and columnist, has said that "State trifurcation is the only realistic solution". "I am of a firm opinion that whosoever advocates holding together all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir State is a hypocrite… It may be called an irony of fate that a State having nothing common in its artificially bound three regions are poles apart from one another in every sphere of life. There is not an iota of commonality found between these three regions historically, economically, religiously, socially, ethnically, politically, theoretically and in all other aspects of human life," he has, among other things, said while endorsing the trifurcation demand. However, another opinion maker in Kashmir Yousuf Nairang has opposed Khayal and said "State's trifurcation will worsen Kashmir problem". "It is however, possible in case, complete internal autonomy of all the three regions is put in place and a mechanism is framed for equitable development of all the regions and sub-regions. This has already been made an election issue by all the main political parties but goodness knows why these parties have not taken concrete and bold steps for its actual realization. Even if regional autonomy and unity is not possible or is not allowed by the vested interest and the divisive elements, trifurcation would make the present Kashmir problem more complex and entangled than it is at present," he has said. In other words, he wants the authorities to grant regional autonomy so that the State is maintained as one political unit. It is important that demand in Jammu and Ladakh for the State's division has triggered a debate with both the separatists and Kashmiri opinion makers taking part in the debate. It is hoped that the ongoing debate will help the authorities reach a right conclusion. However, one thing is very clear: A change, if not a revolution, in the State is imminent. |
