International Disability Day celebrated at MIER

JAMMU, Dec 4 : To mark the International Day for Persons with Disability, an awareness and sensitization programme was organized by Inclusive School-Model Academy along with the Department of Special Education for the parents of students with disabilities.
The theme of the orientation was "Inclusion Matters: Access and Empowerment of People of All Abilities. "The purpose was to develop awareness and positive attitudes about the rights as well as abilities of the children with special needs.
Rupa Gupta, Management Representative Model Academy and Ruchika Gupta, Project Director Humming Birds Model Academy were the Chief Guests. Dr. Rohnika Sharma, HoD Special Education; Dr. Bharti Tandon, Asst. Prof.; Rajendra Parveen, Asst. Prof.; Ashish Anand, Asst. Prof.; Dr. Shweta Mahajan, Physiotherapist and Amrita Devi, Special Educator Inclusive School were present whle students of B.Ed Spl. Education also attended the programme. Harika Singh, Incharge Inclusive School extended a very warm welcome to the dignitaries, parents, students and the faculty. In the beginning, the students with disabilities presented hand-made cards to their parents and the faculty. Singh shared the curriculum and activities that are being organized in the school in addition to the progress of the students with special needs. Two documentaries on inclusive education were shown in the workshop which was followed by an open discussion. Parents shared their experiences, challenges and suggested that such sessions should be periodically organized by the institution. A practical demonstration session of physiotherapy was also organized for the parents. Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER appreciated the efforts of inclusive school-Model Academy and further added that such sensitization workshops are needed to create awareness and generate empathy towards people with exceptionalities.
Dr. Rohnika Sharma presented a formal Vote of Thanks to all.
