2 militants, soldier killed in Kupwara

HANDWARA, Dec 4: Two militants and an army soldier were killed while one jawan was injured on Friday in an encounter between the militants and security forces in Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
According to official sources that, last night security forces had received information about the presence of 3-4 militants in the dense forests of Boban Watsar in Rajwar sector, after which a joint team of army and police launched an anti-militancy operation on Friday morning.
"The security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in Wadder Bala village of Rajwar sector in Handwara area following specific information about the hiding militants inside the forests," sources said.
"The hiding militants were challenged, however they resorted to heavy firing at the security forces, triggering an encounter, which is still going on," sources said.
They said this was an infiltration bid by a group of heavily armed militants which was detected by surveillance devices and alert troops of Indian Army. The whole area was closed after gunfight erupted in Rajwar sector.
"In the ongoing gunfight two militants of LeT outfit and one army man of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Satish Kumar were killed, while as one army jawan sustained minor injuries on Friday," said sources.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, North Kashmir range, Garib Dass told Early Times that, "there were continuous intelligence reports about the presence of 3-4 heavily armed militants from the area, and today morning the contact was established with them." "Two LeT militants and army soldier were killed and one army jawan got splinter injuries, however after legal formalities we have handed over both the dead bodies of militants to local Auqaf committee for last rites," said DIG. He said, "A huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter including, two AK-47 rifles, one UBGL and 2 radio sets, AK-47 magazines and rounds, some clothing's and other items."
The operation is still underway, however the exchange of fire between the two sides was going on till the last reports came in.
