Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 4 : The Jammu and Kashmir residents experienced a slight relief in cold conditions as the night temperature in most parts of the Valley increased, even as MET predicted cold and dry weather ahead.
"The weather will remain dry but cold over the next one week to 10 days. We see no precipitation in Kashmir during this period," Director, Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus said.
He, however, said the sky would remain cloudy.
While the minimum temperature in most places in Kashmir and Ladkah region increased, it remained same, as that of yesterday, in Srinagar and Qazigund at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius and minus 1.8 degrees Celsius respectively, a spokesman of the MET Office said. He said the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg, in north Kashmir, registered a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius as against minus 2.8 degrees Celsius yesterday. The tourist resort of Pahalgam - which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath Yatra - recorded a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius - a marginal increase from the previous night's minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, the spokesman said.
Kupwara, in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 2.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, he said.
The minimum temperature in Kokernag (in south Kashmir) settled at 0.2 degree Celsius, as against minus 0.2 degree Celsius yesterday, the spokesman said, adding the town was the only recorded place in Kashmir division where the mercury stayed above the freezing point.
The minimum temperature in Kargil town, in the frontier region of Ladakh, also increased from yesterday's minus 9.6 degrees Celsius to settle at a low of minus 8.8 degrees Celsius today, he said.
Leh was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir as the mercury settled at a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, though slightly down from the previous night's minus 9.7 degrees Celsius.
Leh was also the only recorded place in Kashmir division where the minimum temperature dropped today.
