Civic bodies recommend ban on cancerous Thermocol, plastic plates | | | Avinash Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 4: Civic bodies of state and tourism department are mulling to ban use of disposable plates and other stuff in state as recent studies have suggested that use of Thermocol, Styrofoam and Plastic could cause cancer. According to documents available with Early Times, Joint Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation apprised Regional Director Jammu & Kashmir State Pollution Control Board about effects of the these plates. It has been observed that people as well as food vendors, hotels, restaurants and hotels are using Thermocol/Styrofoam/Styrene/Plastics/Acrylics as disposable plates for serving and selling their eatables which has caused lot of health and environment problems in Jammu city and also source of health threat to the citizens. "Sathya Prabhu, social activist from Tamil Nadu has come up with Areca Leaf Plates which are natural, biodegradable and suitable for serving and packaging of food items in our area. It is requested that all food vendors/Hotels/Motels/Restaurants concerned and registered with JKPCB be directed to stop using of Thermocol/Styrofoam/ Styrene/Plastics/Acrylics disposable plates and instead start using Areca Leaf made plates which are environment friendly and biodegradable", joint commissioner JMC recommended. He further added that JMC has issued similar instruction to its field staffs for the strict enforcement of ban on such non-biodegrable polluting items in Jammu city. Similar recommendations have also been made by health officer JMC to commissioner JMC recently. Post Graduate Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Government Medical College, Srinagar had also recommended to avoid using Carcinogenic disposables made up of Thermacol/ Styrofoam/Plastic. "Various Scientific studies have proved that using of above mentioned products can lead to various complications in pregnant women and her fetus. I strongly recommend their blanket ban and suggest plant origin and environment friendly alternative products may be encouraged", recommended by the GMC Srinagar. |
