Anti NFSA protests rock Srinagar | People torch ration cards | | Majid Nabi Early Times Report Srinagar, Dec 14: Police used force to quell anti National Food Security Act (NFSA) protests that rocked many city areas on Monday with people setting their ration cards on fire to give vent to their anger against what they termed government's step motherly treatment meted out to poor people. People from volatile Maisuma and its adjacent areas including Manderbagh, Barbar Shah, Gow Kadal, Nai Sadak took to the roads and staged massive anti government protests against implementation of (NFSA) in the state. Shouting anti government slogans the protesters mainly women sat on dharna at Budshah Bridge that severely hampered the traffic movement on busy road for hours together prompting police to resort to tear gas shelling and baton charging to disperse them. The aggrieved protesters expressed their resentment against implementation of NFSA act in the state terming it a ploy to make people dependent on central government for want of food grains. "The successive governments here have been befooling people from time time, firstly they reduced the ration quota from 50 kg per card to 30 kg per card and now PDP- BJP led combine government is hell bent on implementing NFSA in the state which would further lessen the quota and enhance the people’s sufferings," Jameel Ahmad one of the protesters said. The protesters threatened to launch massive valley wide agitation in case the government failed to roll-back the decision within stipulated time period. People also accused the state government of making them suffer for want of electricity, ration and other basic amenities during harsh winter season. "We have also come out to protest the government's callous approach towards us," Raja a protesting women said, adding, "despite highlighting our grievances repeatedly, the government seems least bothered to mitigate woes of general public". The protesters also alleged of 'faulty' ration distribution in the area saying, "the department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) has failed to distribute the monthly ration in thier areas which has added to their woes." The protests triggered traffic chaos in the city centre Lal Chowk, stranding vehicles for hours together. "Earlier police laid barbed wires to confine protesters within Maisuma but the move drew ire from the shopkeepers who protested against it and then police resorted to teargas shelling to avoid traffic blockade," an eye witness told Early Times. |
