Srinagar, Dec 14: The National Conference Working President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday yet again spoke the language of separatists by claiming that India and Pakistan cannot ignore Kashmiris and both the countries have to take them on board.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at NC headquarters here, Omar said, "We welcome Indo-Pak talks but they have to include the Kashmiri leaders (separatists) in the process."
Since the day India and Pakistan have resumed the dialogue process, Omar has been trying to pick the holes and is harping about Kashmir being an issue. "He seems to have become the spokesman of the separatists and is trying to plead their cause," said an analyst.
He said, "If a former CM, who enjoys all the privileges, provided by the Indian state behaves like separatists what can one expect from others. If NC believes that Kashmir is a dispute then the party should give up mainstream politics and its leaders should say goodbye to the privileges enjoyed by them."
A Kashmir watcher said that India has made Pakistan climb down from its position and has made it clear to the neighbouring country that Jammu and Kashmir issue has been settled long back and no talks would be held on Kashmir. "It seems Omar is unaware about the facts. He is trying to mislead the people. Someone needs to remind the former Chief Minister that he played with words when he was in power and kept on raking the controversies like revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) addressing the political dimensions of the Kashmir issue and other non- issues."
He said despite Omar raking controversies people rejected his party in 2014 Parliamentary and Assembly polls. "National Conference biting dust in the last elections should have served as an eye opener for Omar and other mainstream leaders who take refuge in separatism to lure people. The huge participation of the people in 2014 elections was a clear message to one and all that masses are fed up of mere slogans and they are interested in development and peace," he added. A politician said, "Had Omar concentrated on governance and day to day issues confronting people his party, which is the oldest party in Kashmir, would have been saved from facing a humiliating defeat."
The politician claimed that report card of Omar and his ministers was too dismal and 2014 election results proved it. "Soon after the National Security Advisors of India and Pakistan met in Bangkok Omar was first to raise a query by asking was India made to talk Kashmir. He (Omar) even tried to pick up the holes in Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit to Pakistan."
The politician said that Omar as former Chief Minister should learn to behave responsibly rather than just being concerned about hogging the headlines. "The NC President should realize that from 50 plus seats in 2002 his party has been decimated to 15 seats during the past thirteen years. If he (Omar) and other leaders of NC don't mend their ways there is every possibility about NC becoming a history," he added.
