Jammu, Dec 14: On the hind side of government's claims of being responsive and considerate to the issues of the people at large, Daily Wagers and need based workers of GMCH and associated hospitals have not been paid their meagre salaries for over two years. Frustrated to the core, these workers are mulling to shun their works, which may completely jeopardize patient care in this premier health care institution.
"Nearly 160 daily wagers (Mech) engaged at Government Medical College and Hospital, Shri Maharaja Ghulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, Chest Diseases (CD) Hospital and Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) Jammu are running Gas plants, ICUs, CCUs, Operation Theaters (OT) Out Patients Departments (OPD)s, lifts, Water plants and others crucial units, and are likely to shun their work as they have not been paid for months together, " said a hospital employee.
"If any employee works for a month and is not paid at the end of the month, it is sheer exploitation but it seems authorities have turned deaf and dumb toward them. Despite projecting their problems to Administration of these hospitals, Principal, Ministers and Chief Engineer, Mechanical, GMC and associated hospitals, nothing favourable has been done to ensure that these workers got their dues.
"Due to lackadaisical approach of department concerned toward theses employees, we are facing financial crisis. Our children are facing suspension in schools for non-payment of their school fees and we do not have even bus fare to come to attend to our duties in the hospitals. We are already indebted to private financers or relatives, who now refuse to further finance us, "an employee stated. He further said that the indifference of the department was forcing them to stop work and adopt the path of agitation.
When contacted Principal of GMC hospital Jammu and associate hospital Dr. Zahid Gillani said that administration was trying its best and salary issue will be sorted out within week.
