Srinagar, Dec 15: With the onset of winters in Kashmir, unscheduled power cuts have become a perennial problem in downtown areas of Srinagar. Despite tall claims made by the Power Development Department (PDD) over scheduled power system, the department failed to provide solution to the frequent power breakdowns in various areas of downtown, according to the locals. "We are facing tough times as bad weather and frequent power breakdowns are making our lives miserable," Bilal Ahmad, a resident of Nowhatta, told Early Times. Locals said that the erratic cuts became more frequent after the Darbar move. "Soon after the Darbar move, our locality hardly gets any regular power supply," said Minhaj Khan, a resident of Rajouri Kadal. Students are also affected by the by regular power cuts. "I face lot of difficulties during my exams as the erratic power supply is affecting my exam preparations," said Aafreen Ahmad, a student from downtown Srinagar. "PDD officials charge us hefty amounts but fail to provide the necessary power supply," said Muzaffar Ahmad, a resident of Nawa Kadal. The officials, according to locals, are "disinterested" in responding to people's plight. Chief Engineer PDD Bashir Ahmad Khan did not respond to repeated phone calls from Early Times.
