Early Times Report
srinagar, Dec 15: An influential family has started setting up a petrol pump in the vicinity of a girls higher secondary school at Bagh-e-Ali Mardan here, raising concerns about the safety of school children.
Even though Abid Ansari, the concerned MLA of Zadibal constituency has highlighted the safety concerns before his PDP led government, the cries have gone unheard. His representation to the government "reveals a much in the administration."
Official sources said the influential family was running business unit on the industrial estate land and got its "titled changed from the manufacturing of paints and chemicals to filing during the previous National Conference led regime."
"The industrial unit was actually registered in 1980 and after remaining inactive for around ten years it was changed from manufacture of paints to filing station," the sources added.
The concerned MLA, as per sources, has sent a representation to the government seeking review over the grant of permission for the establishment of the petrol pump.
Documents reveal that the MLA smells a rat in the way, the Education department has given the NOC for the construction of the petrol pump in the vicinity of the school.
His representation, a copy of which lies with Early Times, reveals MLAs annoyance over the "administrative slumber."
"How has department of Industries allowed to commercialize the land of industrial estate which is otherwise meant for manufacturing or any other value addition activity. In the instant case, the land of the industrial estate is to be used for establishing a retail outlet. This can open the floodgates and trigger other unit holders to open shops and retail outlets within the estates," the MLA says in the representation to the government.
"The proposed location of the filling station is just adjacent to Govt higher secondary school Zadibal. The metropolitans follow the norm of 100 mts distance between the school or any public institution and any fuel station. In the instant case, the distance is less than 20 mts," the representation said.
The law-maker said the petrol pump would be a problem for the future of the area. "This area (Zadibal) is without any college and the people had hopes that the higher secondary will be upgraded to college and had even represented for it. But the proposed establishment of filing station will jeopardize the plans and even pose threat to the life of students and property," he said in the representation.
He has even raised eyebrows over the working of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. "How has SMC given go ahead to establishment of filling station? Did they not see that it is adjacent to Govt higher Secondary school, Govt spinning mills and craft development institute?" the MLA asked.
When contacted Abid Ansari confirmed that he has sent representations to the government. "Basically, the previous regime has derailed the working in the administration and we are trying to set it right," he said.
