Mehbooba's political advisor to face heat for praising militant Burhan | | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 23: Senior PDP leader and political advisor of Mehbooba Mufti is likely to face heat after terming the dreaded militant leader Burhan Wani a youth icon in Kashmir at present. The statement made by Peerzada Mansoor Hussain has generated a debate within the coalition with several party leaders of both the PDP and the BJP wondering about such a surprising remark and its timing. Though Mansoor trained guns against the former chief minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of being responsible for giving rise to the new radicalised breed of youth in Kashmir, his remark wherein he termed an active Hizb commander Burhan Wani a youth Icon is being termed as an uncalled for statement by many within the mainstream camp. There are several leaders even in Mansoor's own party PDP who have raised questions about declaring militant a youth icon. Those opposing Mansoor's statement opine that making such remarks about the militants would give rise to such a trend in which they would be eulogised and hailed by many in open. Also they stated that at a time when PDP is making series of statements about pacifying the youth anger and channelizing their talent, Mansoor's statement would possibly act as a spoilsport. "It is no less than a confession of militancy taking the front seat in Kashmir. It like the party which is ruling the state admitting defeat in its reconciliatory efforts and declaring that the youth of the present day are more inclined towards the militant path," one of the PDP leaders said. On Tuesday, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain declared young Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani as a "youth icon" while blaming the previous Omar Abdullah-led government for Burhan joining militant ranks. "When you killed unarmed innocent civilians it resulted in the emergence of Burhan, who is a youth icon now. Why did not he, like Shah Faesal, become an IAS officer?" Mansoor asked while addressing a public gathering at the Municipal Park. He also said the PDP was facing problems because of the baggage of the previous government. "In 2010, 120 youths were killed. How many policemen were arrested? How many were jailed? Why are you teaching us new lessons today? We are facing problems today due to what happened then," he said. Mansoor also took a dig at the former chief minister for failing to "connect" with the youth in the Valley. "Omar couldn't connect with the youth, otherwise Burhan wouldn't have picked up arms and turned into an icon for the youth. He could have also become a director education, but 2010 changed the mindset of the youth," he said. Justifying his party's alliance with the BJP, he said there was no difference between the Congress and the saffron party. "During the Congress government, Maqbool Bhat and Shaheed Afzal Guru were hanged. We should differentiate between right and wrong," Mansoor said in response to the Opposition's criticism of the ruling alliance. "The Congress won 12 seats and all are Muslim constituencies. When we say Jammu and Kashmir we have to take all the three regions into consideration. Some decisions are taken out of compulsion," he said. He recalled that the NC had joined hands with the BJP before the PDP did, when Omar was given a ministry in the NDA-government. "Now they taunt us. But who was a minister in the BJP regime when their government had a majority here? We were majboor, but why did you become part of the BJP," he asked. |
