NC sees NFSA implementation as chance to trigger unrest in Valley | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 23: The decision of the PDP-BJP Government to implement National Food Security Act (NFSA) in Jammu and Kashmir has snowballed into a major controversy and opposition National Conference is leaving no stone unturned to corner the coalition over the issue. On Wednesday scores of NC activists took to the streets in Srinagar and staged a protest demanding the Act should be rolled back. The protest was staged a day after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti assured that NFSA would be reviewed and the issues concerning people would be addressed. Sources told Early Times that NC wants to turn implementation of NFSA in the State as a "big issue" and is trying its best to trigger unrest at least in Kashmir if not any other region. Last week protests broke out in many old city areas against the new Act and these demonstrations turned violent at a few places. "A few politicians have asked their henchmen to re-group their boys and orchestrate street protests. A few separatists have also been contacted in this regard and their help has been sought," said a source. He said implementation of NFSA in the State is just a pretext to hit the streets. "It seems a few people are working towards a bigger cause so that uncertainty and confusion prevails on the streets of Kashmir," the source added. The top NC leaders, according to the sources, are basking in sun outside Kashmir and they have handed over the baton to youngsters. "The NC working President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is holidaying in a foreign country while other senior NC leaders are out of station," they added. A police official while talking to Early Times said, "We are keeping a close vigil on the activities of the people who are taking part in the anti-NFSA protest. If they pose a threat to law and order they would be dealt according to the land of the law irrespective of which party they belong to." Sources revealed that separatists joining the protest bandwagon and Hurriyat dove Mirwaiz Umar Farooq threatening the Government of dire consequences if NFSA is not rolled back has emboldened a few leaders of the opposition party and they have started believing that issue has got the potential to put the present regime in the tight spot. "We have seen protests in old city and Mirwaiz Umar delivering fiery speeches against the Act. A few politicians know it very well that if they join hands with Mirwaiz they can take the old city hostage and call the shots," they added. A PDP leader while talking to Early Times said, "Opposition is trying to make a mountain out of molehill. It should behave responsibly. We have understood that the implementation of law has created problems for the nuclear families but we are ready to look into it as scale is the only problem rest there is nothing wrong with the Act." |
