Didn't push for declaring Oct 26 as holiday: BJP | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 23: On December 19, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti gave a certificate of appreciation to BJP while addressing party Ministers, legislators and office-bearers at day-long party meeting in Srinagar, which had been called to review party's preparations for upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Panchayat elections. Hailing the working of the BJP Ministers, she had, inter-alia, said: "This is the best ever Council of Ministers in the State. The BJP Ministers are working with full dedication and devotion under the command of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The BJP has been upholding the coalition dharma". These were not off-the-cuff remarks; these were her well-considered views based on her experience. No BJP Minister, or for that matter the BJP as a party, has ever created a problem for the PDP during all these ten months. The BJP Ministers and the BJP party always exhibited flexibility and spirit of accommodation so that the coalition of north and south polls remained intact and the PDP kept in good humour. There are umpteen instances which show how accommodating and flexible the BJP Ministers and the BJP party have been since the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition Government in J&K. When, for example, the Chief Minister on May 15 declared in Jammu that AIIMS will be established in Kashmir and not in Jammu and the Tawi Artificial Lake Project could be also shelved, the Deputy Chief Minister, who was sitting with him, endorsed his master's statement by remaining silent. Earlier on April 24, the Deputy Chief Minister and BJP senior leader had declared in Jammu that no power on earth could "snatch AIIMS from Kashmir and it will not be established in Jammu". Similarly, when the PDP Law Minister unceremoniously removed Additional Advocate General and Deputy Advocate General (both BJP nominees) for their just stand on anti-cow killing laws and beef eating, the BJP, instead of batting for these law officers, endorsed the Government decision that was taken to address the PDP's constituency in Kashmir. Likewise, when the PDP Finance Minister imposed 12.5 per cent Jaziya tax on the Holy Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage, the BJP didn't make any hue and cry. The Deputy Chief Minister did once assured the people of Jammu that the BJP will see to it that the Jaziya was withdrawn. But when the Finance Minister showed the BJP its place by rejecting its opposition to the imposition of this sinister tax, the BJP fell in line without uttering a word against the PDP Minister. There are several other instances which establish that the BJP is with the PDP whatever the situation, whatever the PDP's attitude and what policy decisions it takes to run the State Government. The latest example is the statement of State BJP general secretary (organization) Ashok Koul that the BJP never pushed for declaring October 26 as holiday. The other day, the State Government notified the list of holidays to be observed in J&K in 2016. In the list, there was no mention of October 26 - the day J&K acceded to the Dominion of India. The absence of October 26 from the list of holidays surprised everyone in Jammu for the reason that the BJP had given the people to understand that October 26 will be declared as holiday, as it was a historic day in the history of India. Your paper had in its edition of December 22 reported that the Chief Minister had turned down the demand of the BJP that October 26 be declared as holiday. In Kashmir, the people observe this day as black day. However, on Tuesday, the BJP general secretary surprised everyone by claiming that the BJP never asked the State Government to declare October 26 as holiday. "We have not made any such demand to the Government. We are averse to the long list of holidays and are demanding that they should be reduced," he was quoted as saying. Earlier, he had given a clean chit to Kashmiri separatists and communalists by saying that they didn't hound out Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley. The statement of Mehbooba Mufti that the "BJP has been upholding the coalition dharma" needs to be viewed in this context. What has gone wrong with the BJP? Why is it kneeling day after day? The kind of coalition dharma the BJP has been upholding has puzzled the people of Jammu province who voted for this party in 2014. |
