PDD: Valley's most-hated department in winter | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report Srinagar: Dec: 24: With the onset of Chillai Kalan, the harshest period of winter in Kashmir, unscheduled power cuts, outages, and erring supply is causing extreme grievance among the people. Not only the summer capital but whole valley is simmering with anger against the Power Development Department, the 'most unloved department during winter' season in the valley. "May they too feel the darkness they put us through," Hajira Bano 60, a resident of Bemina area of Srinagar. The area being one of the worst hit during last year's devastating floods. According to her, the PDD, only shows its face through electricity bills which if not paid lead to disconnection. "I want to burn these bills they send us. Let them come this time I will surely slap them for making winters more harsh for us," added Hajira, standing in a queue for Kerosene oil at a local CAPD depot. "I have never heard about the power schedule issued for load shedding by the government but they cut power according their will. There should be one time for power cut during night hours. The politicians and bureaucrats are staying in Jammu in winter how they will feel the sufferings of common person," she added. The unscheduled and prolonged power cuts have inconvenienced the entire Valley. Most parts of the valley including capital Srinagar have been witnessing reeling under darkness during the situation is alike in metered and non-metered areas. However, during winters, the valley witnesses protests and road blocks against the PDD for continuous power cuts and there are villages and areas where electricity is not visible for days together like Srinagar,Budgam, Shopian, Kupwara, Pulwama and Kulgam and almost all the districts of valley are worst hit. It is pertinent to mention here that not only the common persons are suffering but the non-availability of electricity has badly hit commercial activity also. The industrial units all across the valley remains shut for most of the time bringing a halt in commercial activity. "The shops and business establishments in Srinagar and all other major towns too have to bring down their shutters early in the evening as power supply remains shut on most times," said Yasin Khan, KEA Chairman. "All business is dependent on power. But un-scheduled power cuts affect our business community. We are suffering huge loss," khan added. After failing to provide power supply as per schedule, Chief Engineer PDD, Bashir Khan blaming power thefts for unscheduled power cuts, adding that "It is not most hatred department but PDD is most wanted department in winter in the valley," Khan said.
