NC ‘demonizing' VDCs for politics | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 24: A few people are vociferously demanding that Village Defence Committees (VDCs) should be disbanded and people associated with these committees need to be dealt with sternly. These people should realize that entire force cannot be blamed for a mistake made by one person. National Conference leaders are leaving no stone unturned to politicize the killing of their party worker in Rajouri area. Yesterday NC workers took to the streets in Srinagar demanding that VDCs should be disbanded. A Jammu based NC leader alleged that PDP-BJP coalition are using VDCs as political militia and are using these for creating "fear" and uncertainty. It's unfortunate that a stray incident is being blown out of proportion and no one is making a mention about the good work done by VDCs during the past two and half decades. "Village Defence Committees have played an important role to fight militancy during the past two decades. Many VDC members died while fighting militants in erstwhile Doda district and other frontier areas of Jammu region. We need to respect their sacrifices," said an analyst. "The VDC members were at the forefront when militancy was at its peak. In the initial years of militancy security forces were able to build up their intelligence network due to the guidance provided by the VDC members," said a retired Army official. He opined that politics and VDCs should not be linked as politicizing this vital force can prove to be disastrous in long run. "It's strange that a mainstream party (NC) is behaving like separatists. Till date only separatists used to demand the disbanding of VDCs now NC also has joined the bandwagon," said a Kashmir watcher. He said, "It seems the memory of the NC leaders is very short lived. When they were in power they had created a group of pro-government notorious gunmen who unleashed terror in Kashmir from 1996 to 2002 and killed hundreds of people. This time NC is in opposition and is shedding crocodile tears. NC leaders should answer how many political militias they had created when they were in power?." A defence analyst while talking to Early Times said, "Lot of money and time has been invested on the VDCs. They have undergone vigorous training. Government cannot even think of disbanding them. You cannot punish the entire force for the mistake committed by one person. If anyone has broken the rules he can be dealt according to the law." He said that political parties should refrain from poking their nose into the matters related to national security. "Intelligence and security agencies have time and again acknowledged the roll of VDCs and the job done by them to wipe out militancy from the Jammu region," the defence analyst added. Another expert was of the opinion that disbanding of VDCs can make people living in frontier areas vulnerable to militant attacks. "Militants are on run due to VDCs and they (militants) don't dare to venture into such areas where the VDC members are present," he claimed. "People at the helm should not get perturbed by the noise made by the separatists a few mainstream politicians as they are playing into the hands of militants. They (militants) know it very well that they have failed to tackle the VDC members and VDCs on many occasions have foiled their nefarious designs," opined an expert. |
