Protests continue in Budgam over laying of water supply pipes | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 24 : As Common masses fear a drought like situation in Budgam, the government continued to lay watersupply pipelines for influential people of Airport and adjoining areas amid clashes for the third consecutive day in Budgam between people and security forces. Massive clashes over implementation of a water supply scheme in Central Kashmir's Chadoora and Sogam Villages of Budgam District continued for third consecutive day today. Locals said that two water supply pipelines each 24 inches in width which are being laid from Branwad area to old Airport would cause acute water shortage during the peak irrigation season for residents of around 51 villages. People of Chadoora told Early Times that water supply scheme which is being lifted from Doodh-Ganga river for influential VIP's living around Airport road and adjoining areas is likely to affect paddy cultivation, maize, vegetables and fruits on an approximate area of 650 Hectares of land of District Budgam. "We are on roads from last three days to stop government from fating drought for us in future, officials are aware of bad consequences of lifting Water from Doodh Ganga river but since water supply pipelines are for VIPs so they have no option except to use lathicharge and tear gas shelling to stop us from Protesting but we won't let them do it come what may."Sajad Ahmad one local of Chadoora said locals said that concerned authorities have an option to lift Water supply from Hajigund village instead Branwaad but due to politics over the issue locals are deliberately compelled to come on roads along with their families including woman and children for protesting. For the third consecutive day today clashes erupted in Chadoora and Sogam villages, where people accused security forces of ransacking several residential houses and beating people who were part of the protests over the laying of two water pipeline by the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA). Since morning today hundreds of people were on roads protesting against the highhandedness of authorities amid clashes with the police and CRPF asking ERA to stop working on the behest of VIP's. Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Mir Altaf refuting claims of Protesting people told Early times that this water scheme will even benefit those villagers who are up in arms against it these days and said that "right before the decision of laying this water scheme, both PHE and Irrigation departments conducted an extensive survey of the District keeping in view all aspects related to it." |
