Fresh WD to hit Kashmir-Jammu, Srinagar, Ladakh freezes again

Srinagar, Dec 25 : A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit the Jammu and Kashmir, where summer capital, Srinagar freezes at minus 5.2 degree though sun was playing hide and seek with icy cold winds also continued.
Ladakh region also freezes as minimum temperature witnessed further drop and Leh and Kargil recorded coldest night of the season so far.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that a WD is likely to hit the region which could result in isolated rain or snow in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region during the next 24 hours which will be followed by scattered rain on subsequent day.
Parts of the world famous Dal Lake, taps and other water bodies were frozen again in Srinagar after the minimum temperature recorded drop and settled at minus 5.2 degree, second coldest after minus 5.6 degree recorded on December 21. However, the frozen water melts as the day progressed though sun was playing hide and seek with icy cold winds continued.
He said the sky would be cloudy with the result the mercury would improve. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 8 degree and minus 1 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
However, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg remained coldest in the valley though the mercury witnessed about two degree improvement. Against yesterdays minus 12.5 degree, coldest so far, the minimum temperature was minus 10.2 degree, more than five notches below normal. Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, recorded minus 8 degree, four notches below normal. However, yesterday was the coldest after the night temperature was recorded minus 8.5 degree. Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature witnessed further drop and settled at minus 3.8 degree against yesterdays minus 1.2 degree. There was almost no change in Kupwara where the minimum temperature was minus 4.2 degree while at Kokernag it was 3.7 degree, coldest night of the season. Ladakh continued to freeze as there was further drop in the mercury. Against yesterdays minus 12.9 degree, it was minus 16.2 degree, coldest of the winter so far while at Kargil, a border town it was minus 15 degree lowest recorded during winter so far.
He said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 00 degree and minus 11 respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours.
He said at Jammu, the winter capital of the state, the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minium temperatures would be around 19 degree and 5 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
