Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 25: A Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) was shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi after he sustained injuries during clashes in the Maisuma area of the summer capital today in the afternoon.
The clashes took place immediately after the arrest of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik. Malik along with some of his supporters tried to march towards Lal Chowk while registering their protest against the role of Village Defence Committees (VDCs). The protesters were demanding immediate disbanding of VDCs.
As soon as the Friday prayers were over the JKLF leaders and activists led by Malik assembled at Maisuma and started their march towards Lal Chowk. As soon as the protesters reached near the Budshah Chowk, the huge posse of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel stopped them and did not allow them to proceed.
The protesters offered stiff resistance to police and CRPF personnel with the JKLF Chairman leading the charge. Both the sides entered into heated arguments and the situation turned tense in the entire area. The police and CRPF personnel succeeded in stopping the march and as such the protesters could not reach the city centre. Malik and some of his supporters were whisked away to the Kothi Bagh police station.
The news of JKLF Chairman's arrest spread like a wildfire in the entire area. Scores of youth with majority of them belonging to JKLF took to the streets and started pelting stones on police and CRPF personnel. The stone pelting incidents led to complete standstill in the Maisuma and the adjoining areas.
Groups of agitating youth clashed with police and CRPF personnel and in no time all the shops got closed in the Maisuma and adjacent areas. Reinforcements were rushed to the area and the situation was somewhat brought under control by police and CRPF personnel only after few hours.
As the situation was almost normal SDPO Kothi Bagh Fahad Tak along with some other police officials entered one of the lanes in order to disperse the protesters. A stone pelted by one of the protesters hit Fahad in his eye and he bled profusely. The SDPO was immediately rushed to the hospital and following this he was shifted to AIIMS New Delhi for specialized treatment. SHO Kothi Bagh also sustained injuries during the stone pelting incidents.

At the same time the authorities enforced restrictions in South Kashmir's Pulwama district after clashes erupted over the killing of a militant of Chatpora-Pulwama during a brief encounter at Ajas in Bandiporaon Thursday evening. The slain militant identified as Omais Ahmad Sheikh alias Hamza had joined Lashkar-e-Toiba only this year and died in the encounter with security forces on Thursday evening.
