Opposition to NFSA: Will Congress stick to its stand? | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 25: The decision of the PDP-BJP coalition Government to implement the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in J&K has created a sort of furore in the already restive Kashmir Valley. All the separatists have joined hands against this legislation. They have threatened a Valley-wide agitation. The out-of-power NC and several so-called civil society groups in the Valley too have upped their ante against the Act and asked the State Government not to implement it. The NC, like the separatists, has also threatened an agitation against the Act. Former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has issued several statements against the Act and termed it "anti-people". As for the PDP and the BJP, the former is open to suggestions and the latter has declared that the Act will be implemented in its letter and spirit. One PDP Minister has said that the NFSA "is not a word of God or a holy religious book that can't be touched". The Chief Minister has declared that the Act will be implemented, and, at the same time, said that his Government was willing to consider the suggestions, if any, on the NFSA. Surprisingly, the Congress leadership has thrown its weight behind the Act and taken a positive stand on the issue. There are reasons for that. The NFSA is the Congress' brainchild. Former JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz has supported the Act and opined that its implementation will not impact the special status of the state it enjoys under Article 370. He has also said that it will benefit the deserving people of the state. The present JKPCC Ghulam Ahmad Mir has also supported the Act and toed his predecessor's line. However, the question is: Will the Congress continue to stick to its stand considering the anti-NFSA sentiment in the Valley created by the separatists and parties like the NC? After all, both Soz and Mir hail from Kashmir and the Congress leadership is trying its best to expand its constituency in the Kashmir Valley. It would be considered a bold stand on its part, if the Congress sticks to its stand. |
